My love for the Steelers is on and off the field, and parking lot i guess. In case you lived under a rock the past week, you should know that the Steelers played in the NFL opener against the Titans (pause for boos). Of course we won, but more went into preparing for the victory than ESPN or any other broadcasters would like you to think. It all begins with a solid foundation.
Now everyone is most likely under the impression that all our fans went to the concert before, and then made it over to the parking lot at Heinz Field to get a decent buzz so they could avoid the $30 beers inside the stadium. This is false. If you're like me and need to soak up all the tailgates have to offer, there is no point in going to a concert that has nothing to do with our wonderful team. Instead, wake up and email your professor, and tell her how sick you are so there is no way you can make it to your 9 a.m. class. Now, get decked out in any article of clothing that includes, but is not limited to, black, gold (yellow is acceptable), or have any mention of how amazing the Steelers truly are.
Next step, the 'pre-tailgate'. This is what i think really sets apart Steeler fans from any other fans, because it is not enough to get drunk and obnoxious at the tailgate, you must arrive there in this state already (as long as you have a safe way of travel of course...DUI's do not help you enjoy a tailgate).Once you arrive at a Steelers tailgate and set up your 'kitchen' (the cooler for beverages, grill and table for food/ beer pong, and who can forget the lawn chairs) your in business. This is the stage in the tailgate that things start getting intense. Throw on some 'Renegade' and look around. You should feel like you are at a family reunion, no judging or someone saying, "Is that man wearing a black and gold cape saying he's a Super Steeler?". Everyone is there to accomplish the same goal, get drunk, eat delicious food, and cheer on the Steelers. With a little liquid courage, you'll be surprised of the words of encouragement you can give the Steelers, along with some pretty derogatory ones for the other team.
If you can really think of a better way to support a team, please let me know, because I am almost positive that not only will a good tailgate give your team the support they need to win, but it also maximizes your good time as a fan. Just make sure to stay out of jail, and don't throw up on the person next to you, because they will throw you out.

I totally agree with your comment about the people who attended the pre-game concert prior to the game. A REAL steeler fan would have skipped that and would have started drinking in the parking lot somwhere around 2pm. That concert had nothing to do with the game and was a stupid idea for ABC or whom ever carried the game to make a quck buck off of our beloved Pittsburgh Steelers...Though I did not mind seeing Fergie in those leather pants! Ha Good post.
ReplyDeleteFergie in the leather pants was defintiely the high light of the concert. But there is no better way to enjoy a Steeler game with out tailgating out in the parking. It's the total atmosphere out there in the parking lot that just ramps you all up and prepares you for one hell of an on field ass whooping.
ReplyDeleteWell I regret to say that I was too busy doing beer bongs in the parking lot to notice Fergie's amazing leather pants. However, boys I will take your word for it. Maybe I'll youtube the concert if it was really that memorable!
ReplyDeleteNice post! (Your voice is terrific.) This is kind of off-topic, but I'm the curious-geek type. What's the history of beer bonging? Seriously. I want to know. Who first thought of this? (It might be the same person who first stuck a screwdriver into a can of beer, but who knows.) Is it possible to find out? Hm. Maybe Google can add some new dimensions here. Also -- tailgating. When did the tradition start? See? Geeky. But still... As for that concert, Fergie was fab, but who invited Tim McGraw? Seriously. He's not even a Steeler fan. Meh.
ReplyDeleteWow sounds like pure fun.It seems like its similar to soccer in Jamaica when the Reggae Boys Play the whole island is in excitement especially, when they win. They have cars from Montego- bay to kingston singing and dancing along the streets. Party here, party there, party each and everyehere. Im glad to see to see a little bit of excitement every now a then because i can relate to home. I love the steelers anyway.
